Visian ICL

ICL – Implantable Collamer Lens

What is ICL?  While you may have heard it called the Implantable Contact Lens, the Visian ICL officially stands for Implantable Collamer Lens.  Collamer is a technologically advanced lens material exclusive to STAAR Surgical.  Because of the collagen base in Collamer, it is 100% compatible with your body’s natural chemistry.  Among collamer’s advantages are its anti-reflectivity and UV protection.  The Visian ICL is the best choice for a lens that is going to remain in your eye for a lifetime.

Good Candidate

If you are between the ages of 21 and 45 and nearsighted, you are an excellent candidate for the Visian ICL.  The Visian ICL is able to treat patients with thin corneas, dry eyes and patients with low and extreme high refractive errors.  In fact, if you have thin corneas or dry eyes, ask the doctor if the Visian ICL may be the best vision correction option for you.

Why Choose the Visian ICL

For years, the only method of permanent vision correction that didn’t involve glasses or contacts was corrective laser eye surgery. With the advent of the Visian ICL, however, that’s all changed. Not only is there now a new alternative, but the Visian ICL may actually produce superior vision quality. It’s vision that’s sharper, clearer, more vivid and has greater depth and dimension – in a simple, 15-minute outpatient procedure.

After the simple 15-minute outpatient procedure, patients experience an immediate improvement in vision quality and are “Wowed” by the results. The recovery for the Visian ICL is quick and pain-free, and may be as little as one day, due to the very small opening required. Patients typically experience minimal discomfort, and many times go back to work the next day.

One of the most common concerns people have about LASIK is that the procedure permanently changes the eye. One of the important advantages of the Visian ICL is that while it can permanently correct your vision, in the unlikely event that an ICL patient experiences negative side effects after surgery, the lens can be removed and/or replaced if necessary.

While Lasik involves cutting and removing eye tissue that cannot be replaced, concerns involving the cornea typically do not apply to the Visian ICL. In fact, no natural corneal tissue is permanently removed or reshaped in any way during implantation of the Visian ICL.

A Simple Procedure

The Visian ICL procedure is a short 15 minute outpatient procedure.  Prior to the implantation of the Visian ICL, you will receive topical anesthetic drops to minimize discomfort.  The doctor then creates a micro opening to insert the lens.  The lens is folded and loaded into a small cartridge and as the lens is injected, it gently unfolds in your eye.  Patients then experience an immediate improvement in vision quality and are “Wowed” by the results.
